THE MEANING OF THE CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS IN MELBOURNE CHINATOWN
The Chinatown Community and supporting Chinese Community organisations have undertaken Chinese New Year celebrations in Melbourne’s Chinatown for over 160 years.
The celebration is an expression of authentic intangible cultural heritage and tradition expressed by the same community for over one and a half centuries in this special cultural precinct in Melbourne.
The activities have deep cultural meaning and spiritual significance particularly to the hundreds of long term occupiers in the precincts, along with the many tens of thousands of Chinese and non-Chinese visitors to the Festival.
The Festival’s main attraction is the Millennium Dragon Procession paraded by the Melbourne Dai Loong Association, the proud organiser of the Chinese New Year Festival program in Melbourne’s Chinatown.
The Festival aims to encourage the enjoyment of a diverse range of traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural activities performed and shown by Chinese Australian artists and practitioners who have originated from many parts of Asia.
